Publications

The quality of my research and intellectual contribution is reflected in my citations. Deliberative Policy Analysis has been cited more than 2600 times since its publication according to Google Scholar; the next four publications between 780 and 280 times. My two books on Interpretive Policy Analysis and my 2007 paper on citizen participation are recognised classics in the fields. I also have received two major awards: the 2004 Marshall E. Dimock Award for the best lead article in Public Administration Review (For “’Knowing’ the Rules. Administrative Work as Practice”) and the 2007 ‘best article’ award in the American Review of Public Administration (for “Governance, Complexity and Democratic Participation: How citizens and public officials harness the complexities of neighbourhood decline”).

Books

Wagenaar, H. (2023) VerzamelKunst, Groningen: Kunsthandel Peter ter Braak. (in Dutch)

This book is about a small art gallery, Galerie ter Braak in Zwolle, and its owner Rijn ter Braak. For the 21 years of its existence, Galerie ter Braak, in its premises on the historic Melkmarkt in Zwolle, was an institution, known and loved by a loyal clientele. The gallery specialized in Dutch and Belgian art of the first half of the twentieth century. Rijn's philosophy was that good art should be affordable. Galerie ter Braak convincingly demonstrated that the art trade is not necessarily the domain of the rich and that museum-quality art is accessible to art lovers on average incomes.

This book is also about collecting art. I describe how my transformation from art lover (someone who is interested in art but knows it only from a distance, from museums and books) to art collector (someone for whom art becomes a passion, a necessity, a journey of discovery through an inexhaustible, enchanting world) came about. Great artists draw inspiration from their predecessors. I show how the aspiring art collector gradually becomes part of this geography- and history-spanning conversation among artists, and between artists and their audiences. I describes how Rijn taught me how to to perceive and appreciate art during the years that I was a regular visitor to the Gallery. How, guided by a friend, I learned to distinguish good from mediocre art through careful and informed observation. I have tried to convey the joy that this has brought to my life.

This richly illustrated book presents fifteen highlights from the collection of Galerie ter Braak, as well as three favorite paintings by Rijn himself. For each selected painting, the author presents a brief biography of the artist in his or her time, followed by a discussion of the painting within the painter's oeuvre. All the artists discussed in the book are second tier in the pantheon of Belgian and Dutch painting. None of them are part of the official canon. Their work does not sell for stratospheric prices at auctions. But the book tries to show that the best work of these painters belongs as much to the story of painting in the Low Countries as that of their more famous peers. This makes the book not only a biography of an iconoclastic art dealer but also a much needed addition to the history of Dutch and Belgian painting of the twentieth century.

The book is In Dutch. Price € 29,50. It can be ordered here.
